Merit Badge Counselors

So, you want to become a Merit Badge Counselor…

Here’s what to do:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Be knowledgeable in the subject area of a specific Merit Badge, either by vocation, avocation, or special training.
  3. Be Current With Safeguarding Youth Training. Safeguarding Youth Training expires once a year and may be taken online at my.scouting.org.
  4. Complete AB506 Training On-line and get Fingerprinted. If you are not AB506 Trained, follow this link: https://californiascouting.org/training/ You can call the Council Office (714-546-4990) to schedule a complimentary fingerprinting appointment.
  5. Fill out the BSA Adult Application. A Merit Badge Counselor is an additional position requiring a new BSA Adult Application – follow this link: https://my.scouting.org/VES/OnlineReg/1.0.0/?tu=UF-MB-039c05. Our Canyons District Executive will review your application.
  6. Complete Merit Badge Counselor Training On-line at my.scouting.org. You may also be able to attend this class at the University of Scouting. Some Merit Badges require additional training or certification which can be uploaded during completion of Step #7.
  7. Fill out the Merit Badge Counselor Information Form On-Line by following this link: 1FAIpQLSdmlgF1VNgN3i4BxiF5q4FaFaO62sux9ITtZtHrartaApKXdw/viewform?pli=1
    Upload any additional training or certification required by the Merit Badge directly on this on-line form.
  8. If you wish to update the Merit Badges that you teach, submit the on-line Merit Badge Counselor Information Form in Step 7.
  9. Within 7 to 10 days you will receive an email from CanyonsDistrictMB@gmail.com approving you for the Merit Badges you applied for, or providing you with further instructions.
  10. Our Canyons District Executive will approve your application and add you into Scoutbook as a Merit Badge Counselor. Once your name appears in Scoutbook you are authorized to begin working with youth on your approved Merit Badges.
