Merit Badge Counselors

There is a new application process to become a Merit Badge Counselor in the Canyons District.

  • No more paperwork! (unless the merit badge requires certain certifications)
  • Fill out this form (both new merit badge counselors as well as those that want to add/drop merit badges)
  • Receive an email with a copy of the application and if needed, instructions on how to apply to be a counselor online with a link.

Training Requirements:

  1. All merit badge counselors should take part in Merit Badge Counselor Position Specific Training found in their my.scouting account under Scouts BSA.
  2. All registered volunteers need to take Youth Protection Training
  3. All volunteers in California need to comply with California law AB506.
    • This includes completing the California Mandated Reporter Training for child abuse and neglect identification and reporting found here: https://mandatedreportertraining.com/volunteers/
    • They must upload the certificate to https://californiascouting.org/oc/
    • They must also get fingerprinted, which can be done for free through reaching out to me to come to a Troop 0242 meeting and fingerprinting multiple people, or calling 714-546-4990 and scheduling an appointment with the council office.

Requirements 1 and 2 are required before they can be accepted as a Merit Badge Counselor and 3 must be completed within 60 days of registration.

If you are already registered with a unit and have completed the training requirements listed, you do not need to redo any of them provided the YPT is current.

The District goal is to reduce paperwork and the onboarding time to 7 days or less. If you have someone that has already submitted an application and is waiting for a response, please have them fill out this form to expedite the application process.
