Advancement Updates

Attention all Life Scouts and Eagle Scout Candidates:

Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Discontinuance:

The Citizenship in Society Merit Badge will be discontinued effective Friday, February 27, 2026. Beginning on February 27, 2026, Scouts will no longer be able to start requirements on the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge.

Effective Feb. 27, 2026, the rank of Eagle Scout will have 13 required merit badges instead of 14. Scouts will have 8 elective Merit Badges from which to choose instead of 7.  The total Merit Badges for the Eagle Scout rank will remain at 21 Merit Badges (13 required + 8 elective = 21 merit badges).

January 2026 Eagle Scout Rank Application:

Effective Immediately, there is a new Eagle Scout Rank Application which removes the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge. The Eagle Scout Rank Application, that all Life Scouts should use, can be found at this link: https://www.scouting.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/512-728_26-Eagle-Scout-Application_WEB.pdf.    In addition, the Application asks for demographic information on the Life Scout’s parents/guardians.  While the information is under the section where Scouts send out Appraisals, please note that it is for informational purposes only, the Parents/Guardians are not encouraged to send an Appraisal.
